EU customs, VAT and conformity

Goods entering the EU need an EORI number for the importer, a correct commodity code, a customs value the authority will accept, and proof of origin if you want preferential duty. Import VAT is charged at the destination country's rate; registered businesses can often defer or reverse-charge it, but this has to be arranged in advance rather than discovered at the border.

Product conformity is where most shipments actually fail. CE marking, REACH, RoHS, machinery and low-voltage directives, food contact rules and labelling in the local language all apply to the goods themselves, not to the freight. A container of technically fine product with the wrong marking is a container that does not enter the EU.

The UK is now a separate customs territory with its own declarations, UKCA marking and its own VAT treatment. Shipments to Britain and to the EU are not interchangeable — we handle them as distinct destinations.

How do I move personal belongings to Europe?

Do I need an EU company to import?

You need an importer of record with an EORI number. That can be your own entity, your customer, or an indirect representative we arrange.

What is the cheapest way to send a pallet to Europe?

LCL sea, if you have four to six weeks. If not, air is roughly three to five times the price and one tenth the time. We quote both.

Can you ship goods of Chinese origin via Dubai to the EU?

Yes, and it is a normal re-export pattern. Note that passing through a free zone does not change the origin of the goods for EU duty and trade-measure purposes — we will tell you exactly what that means for your commodity.
